GFC versus COVID. Matthews put out an interesting thought piece comparing the GFC to the current economic climate on a number of key variables. The GFC was more of a slow-motion car crash compared to the lightning strike of COVID lockdowns. Also notable were the price tags of the government stimulus packages: the TARP and the Recovery Act of 2009 totaled $1.3 trillion in a final accounting, while the recent stimulus to combat COVID topped out at $5 trillion.

California demanding green freight. California regulators are aggressively pushing to establish cleaner, emissions-free freight and warehouse sectors. Medium and heavy-duty trucks in the state, which account for 1/5 of California’s greenhouse gas emissions, must be zero-emission by 2045. Heavy power and charging stations will be the must-have IOS amenity in the Golden State. Expect other west coast states and major ports to follow, especially those that cater to Fortune 500 clientele with ESG demands. Smart investors will do the value-add enhancements now to get ahead of the wave.

Trans-Pacific container spot rates WAY down. Trans-Pacific eastbound spot prices are around their lows for the year. The downshift in volumes could result in drop of 10% to 20% below the levels observed in the second half of 2019. Presently, rates fluctuate between $1,000 and $1,700 for shipments from China/East Asia to the U.S. West Coast, while rates from China/East Asia to the U.S. East Coast hover between $2,000 and $2,700, based on data from the Freightos Baltic Daily Index. Soft demand could trigger a price war among ocean carriers who want to gain market share during this downcycle.
